The Global Waste Challenge
Every year, humanity generates between 2.1 and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste. Without immediate action, this figure could rise to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. Waste pollution threatens human health, economic prosperity, and our environment, contributing to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Focus on Fashion and Textiles
This yearβs theme, “Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles” highlights the significant impact of the fashion industry on global waste. Each year, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textile waste are produced, equivalent to a truckload of clothing being incinerated or landfilled every second. The rise of fast fashion has led to overproduction and overconsumption, creating severe environmental, economic, and social consequences.
What Can We Do?
Achieving zero waste requires a collective effort from governments, businesses, and individuals:
Governments must promote sustainable waste management policies and circular economy strategies.
Businesses should adopt eco-friendly production methods, focusing on reuse, repair, and recycling.
Individuals can make a difference by choosing sustainable fashion, repairing clothing, donating unwanted textiles, and supporting responsible brands.
